What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Delivery

Preparing for your baby’s arrival is an exciting and busy time, and one of the most important things you can do ahead of time is pack your hospital bag. Having everything ready to go by around 36-37 weeks ensures you’ll be prepared whenever your little one decides to make their grand entrance! Here’s a checklist of essentials to bring for mom, baby, and your support person.

Essentials for Mom:

  1. Important Documents – ID, insurance information, and hospital paperwork.

  2. Comfortable Clothing – A loose, comfy robe, nightgown or oversized T-shirt, and socks or slippers.

  3. Maternity Bra & Nursing Pads – If you plan to breastfeed, a supportive nursing bra is helpful.

  4. Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, deodorant, face wipes, chapstick, and any other personal care items you need.

  5. Postpartum Essentials – Maxi pads, adult diapers, or disposable underwear for extra comfort. Although hospitals tend to provide you with these essentials.

  6. Snacks & Drinks – Labor can be long, and you may want light snacks like granola bars or crackers. However, be sure to ask your provider prior as not all providers and hospitals allow food during labor.

  7. Phone & Charger – A long charging cable is best since outlets can be far from the hospital bed.

  8. Going Home Outfit – Loose, comfortable clothes that feel good postpartum.

  9. Pillow & Blanket – Hospital bedding can be uncomfortable, so bringing your own can help you rest better.

  10. Entertainment & Comfort Items – A book, music playlist, or essential oils for relaxation. A small fan can be great too if you feel too hot.

  11. Birth Plan - If you created a birth plan that you discussed with your provider you can also pack extras.

Essentials for Baby:

  1. Going Home Outfit – Choose a weather-appropriate outfit for your little one.

  2. Newborn Diapers & Wipes – The hospital usually provides these, but it’s good to have extras.

  3. Swaddle Blanket & Hat – Keep baby warm and cozy.

  4. Car Seat – This is a must-have before leaving the hospital!

  5. Pacifier (If Using) – Some hospitals don’t provide them, so bring one if you plan to use it.

Essentials for Your Support Person:

  1. Change of Clothes – Pack comfortable clothes in case of a long stay.

  2. Snacks & Drinks – They’ll need energy to support you through labor.

  3. Pillow & Blanket – Hospital chairs aren’t always the comfiest for resting.

  4. Entertainment – A book, tablet, or headphones can help pass the time.

  5. Phone & Charger – To capture those special first moments and stay connected.

Extra Tips:

  • Pack light but efficiently.

  • Keep the bag in your car or by the front door once you reach 36-37 weeks.

  • Ask your hospital what they provide to avoid overpacking.

Having your hospital bag ready brings peace of mind and allows you to focus on the excitement of meeting your baby. Is there something you found essential that isn’t on this list? Share in the comments below!
